On a mission
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to write about the shortage of skills in the construction industry and about the need for more skilled people to support our green transition. Now the world of work has some other major issues, like the lack of employment for young people and the loss of jobs amongst the professional classes, who are fearful of having work to see them through to retirement. Aged 75.
Surely the gaps in some industries could be filled by the changes taking place in others. All it needs is some motivating outreach at scale that opens up industries to the people looking for roles, and paid training to enable people to transition into new careers. Ok, admittedly that will cost a bit – but money well spent. These mocked-up recruitment ads depict my vision. If only they were real.
Have you heard mention of putting the nation on a war footing of late? It’s meant in defence terms but what about in relation to some other major missions, such as building 1.5 million homes, electrification and renewable energy, and supporting the young into work? That’s what I expect from Burnham should he become PM and make one of his top priorities unleashing the nation’s talents. I really hope it is.
Did I also mention the ideas I’ve had around rationing…?
